ulcer recovery program

Why Consider a Supportive Recovery Program for Ulcer Horses?

Because medication alone may not address the full picture.
Gastrogard® (omeprazole) is a widely used veterinary medication to help manage gastric ulcers in horses. However, many equine professionals agree: unless you also address the underlying stressors and feeding routines, the symptoms may return.

Gastric discomfort is a common issue in racehorses. A New Zealand study (2003–2004) found that 88.3% of racehorses showed signs of gastric ulcers — highlighting just how widespread the issue can be.

At Haras Bucephale, our own experience with two ulcer-affected horses inspired us to go deeper. The result is a comprehensive support program designed to promote healing through calm, horse-centered care.

The Haras Bucephale Ulcer Recovery Support Program

A 5-Step Approach for Body & Mind
Our program is based on years of practical experience, recent research, and a deep understanding of what high-performance horses truly need to restore comfort — both physically and emotionally.
Initial Evaluation & Documentation
Every horse is welcomed with care. We document their physical condition, behavior, and diet history. Photos and baseline data help us track progress throughout the stay.
Observation & Root Cause Investigation
We take time to understand the bigger picture. This may include:
  • Optional blood testing
  • Diet analysis (e.g., starch content)
  • Stable environment review (noise, light, routine)
  • Feeding habits (hay vs. concentrates)
  • Stress history (training, travel, handling)
If necessary and in coordination with your veterinarian, an endoscopy may be recommended to further clarify the situation.
Comfort, Nutrition & Calm Environment
We tailor a care plan to support digestive comfort and minimize stress:
  • 4–6 warm, easily digestible meals per day
  • Diet plans that complement medical treatment when applicable
  • Rest in softly bedded boxes
  • Quiet, rural environment with daily paddock time
  • Red light therapy (optional)
  • Gentle routines focused on relaxation and recovery
Gradual Rebuilding of Strength
Once signs of improvement appear, we support a gentle transition:
  • Reintroduction of energy-rich feeds
  • Muscle development and healthy weight gain
  • Careful monitoring of physical and emotional response
This stage helps prevent setbacks and builds sustainable progress.
Emotional Support & Stress Resilience
Since stress is often a key trigger, we work on mental well-being too:
  • Light groundwork and gymnastic exercises
  • Cognitive challenges to build focus
  • Gradual return to work with no pressure
  • Activities that promote self-confidence and emotional balance
Our goal is not just recovery — but long-term resilience.

What This Program Aims to Support

Our aim is to offer your horse the best possible conditions for recovery — physically and emotionally. Through our individualized care and calm environment, we strive to help your horse:
  • Regain comfort and well-being
  • Develop better stress resilience
  • Move forward with renewed potential for a healthy, active life

At the end of the program, you’ll receive a customized feeding and care plan tailored to your horse’s individual needs, to help maintain progress at home.
